Marriage
Opening Song: I Will Follow God's Plan (Children's Songbook 164)
Scripture: D&C 49:15–17, 1 Cor. 11:11
Closing Song: A Happy Family (Children's Songbook 198a)
Activity: Using a puzzle (a shape puzzle where the shapes will only fit in their particular hole). Explain how you can try to fit a puzzle piece where it doesn't belong but it just doesn't work. This is the same for marriage. It doesn't work the same if it is done any differently.
"Marriage between man and woman is ordained of God." (The Family: A Proclamation to the World)
Q: What does the word ordain mean?
A: to order, decree, or appoint by virtue of superior authority
Adam and Eve were married by Heavenly Father in the garden of Eden. God has commanded his children to be married so that we can create families. He has taught us that marriage is to be between a man and a woman.
Some people choose not to get married. Some people choose to live together but not get married. They might even have children. This isn't how God wants it to be. He knows we will be happiest if we are married. Studies have shown that married people are happier than unmarried people. God doesn't want us to be alone. He wants us to have a companion. When Heavenly Father created Adam, he said "it is not good for man to be alone." He then created Eve to be Adam's companion.
In the world today, there is a lot of confusion. There are many people who are attracted to the same sex or same gender. They are known as gay or lesbian. This doesn't make them bad or wicked that they feel this way but it is wrong if they choose to marry someone of the same sex. We know that this is wrong. We can still be kind and love these people but we also need to stand up for God's commandment that marriage is to be only between and man and a woman. Some people feel that this may not be fair to those who are gay. We know though that Heavenly Father's plan is called the Plan of Happiness and that he wants all of his children to be happy. He has promised us that if we keep his commandments, we will be happy. There are many gay people who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who choose to keep the commandments. They choose to follow God's plan for them.
