Trials

Opening Song: Come, Come Ye Saints (Hymn#30)

Scripture: John 14:27, John 16:33 D&C 121:7-8

Activity: Play the family pretzel game. Everyone stands in a circle and each member grabs someone's hand that isn't standing next to them. While still holding hands, each person grabs another hand. Now that the family is one big knot, everyone works to get untangled without letting go of hands.

Closing Song: Be Still, My Soul (Hymn #124)

"Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed."(The Family: A Proclamation to the World)

An image of a man’s hand holding a woman’s hand, combined with a quote by Elder Neil L. Andersen: “No trial is so large we can’t overcome it together.”

As a family, we go through hard things. One of us might get sick, we might have someone we know and love pass away. Our car might break down. There are many things that can be trials in our lives. Can you think of some hardships that we have gone through?

How do we handle these trials?

If we stay close as a family, we know that we can lean on our family when we go through hard things. For example, when Mom gets sick, Dad might stay home from work to help take care of her and the rest of the family. Or maybe Grandma comes over to help. As families, it is our duty to help each other and support one another through trials.

President James E. Faust explained:"Into every life there come the painful, despairing days of adversity and buffeting. There seems to be a full measure of anguish, sorrow, and often heartbreak for everyone, including those who earnestly seek to do right and be faithful. The thorns that prick, that stick in the flesh, that hurt, often change lives which seem robbed of significance and hope. This change comes about through a refining process which often seems cruel and hard. In this way the soul can become like soft clay in the hands of the Master in building lives of faith, usefulness, beauty, and strength. For some, the refiner’s fire causes a loss of belief and faith in God, but those with eternal perspective under-stand that such refining is part of the perfection process" (May,1979) The Refiner’s Fire. Ensign, 53
